Greenhous Group showcases career progression at DAF Birmingham with Jack Tomlinson

Greenhous Group's commitment to developing talent from within continues to be demonstrated through the career progression of Jack Tomlinson, Service Manager at Greenhous DAF Birmingham.

Jack joined Greenhous in July 2016 as an Apprentice HGV Technician after completing his GCSEs. At just 15 years old, he was eager to begin his working life and pursue a hands-on career rather than continue in full-time education.

After attending his first interview at Greenhous DAF Wolverhampton, Jack knew immediately that he wanted to build his career with the business. The interview process left a lasting impression, reinforcing that Greenhous offered more than just a job – it provided a clear pathway for long-term development.

Jack spent three years in the workshop, developing his technical knowledge before choosing to broaden his experience by moving into service and warranty administration in February 2019. The transition proved successful and, just three months later, he stepped into the role of Workshop Controller at Greenhous DAF Shrewsbury at the age of 18.

Martin Hill, Regional Aftersales Director, has played a significant role in Jack's development and recognised early on that his ambitions extended beyond the workshop.

"I took over the management of Jack in 2018 when I was appointed Service Manager at our Wolverhampton location. During his annual personal development meeting, it became evident that although Jack was a capable technician, his heart wasn't in repairing trucks and his career needed to move in a different direction.

"We agreed that warranty and invoicing would be the next step, but only once he had completed his mechanical apprenticeship, which he did. Even at a young age, you could see Jack's hunger to progress. The role was always going to be a stepping stone, and when the Workshop Controller position became available at our Shrewsbury operation, Jack was eager to continue his development. He applied for the role and was successful."

After spending 18 months at Greenhous DAF Shrewsbury, Jack relocated to Greenhous DAF Birmingham, recognising the opportunity to further develop his career at one of the Group's largest DAF dealerships.

Under the guidance of Mike Seeley, Jack continued to broaden his knowledge of the service operation, taking on increasing responsibility while developing his leadership skills. After three years as Workshop Controller, he was promoted to Trainee Service Manager before progressing to Service Manager around 18 months later.

Reflecting on Jack's journey, Mike Seeley said:

"I find it hard to believe it's been 10 years since I was interviewing Jack for the position of an HGV Technician. Jack has progressed to the position of Service Manager through hard work, a willingness to listen and learn, and a sheer determination to succeed.

Well done, Jack, and I wish you well for the future."

Reflecting on Jack's career, Martin Hill also shared:

"Jack is incredibly KPI-driven and, when given a task or objective, he always delivers. He has made some fantastic improvements within the department and has helped it evolve into a high-performing operation. Jack continued to grow throughout every stage of his career. During his time in Birmingham, he embraced every opportunity to learn, taking on more responsibility and developing a strong understanding of every aspect of the service operation.

He is also a great advocate for Greenhous, incredibly company-focused and a pleasure to work with. His positive attitude and exceptional work ethic make him a real asset to both the Birmingham team and the wider business."

Jack's journey is a testament to Greenhous Group's commitment to nurturing talent from within and providing genuine opportunities for career progression. From Apprentice HGV Technician to Service Manager in less than a decade, his story demonstrates what can be achieved through ambition, dedication and the support of a business committed to investing in its people.
