Brake Testing - Loaded Brake Testing
Staying Compliant with HGV Brake Testing Regulations
Maintaining compliance with HGV brake testing legislation is not just a legal requirement—it's essential for ensuring vehicle safety and roadworthiness. Under the Road Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, all components of a heavy goods vehicle’s braking system must be kept in proper working condition at all times.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) currently recommends a minimum of four loaded brake tests per year. However, April 2025, this recommendation will became a legal requirement. This change aimed to remove uncertainty around testing frequencies and raise safety standards across the industry.
To stay ahead of the new legislation, operators should carry out risk assessments that take into account each vehicle’s age, mileage, and usage. These factors help determine the appropriate frequency of brake testing and ensure that your fleet remains fully compliant and safe on the road.
